Connie Mick, Director of Community-Based Learning at the University of Notre Dame and a faculty participant in the Shepherd Consortium, has just published an introduction to poverty studies that also serves as text for writing courses in higher education. In the preface, Connie cites the influence of her participation of the Shepherd Consortium, especially the symposium with Ron Haskins and Kathy Edin, with helping her frame the book. She notes that although Oxford is publicizing the book for college writing courses, she also had in mind the introductory and capstone courses at Shepherd Consortium schools as a principal audience when she wrote Poverty/Privilege.
Connie has taught at Notre Dame for 15 years. She is co-director (with SHECP Board member, Jennifer Warlick) of the Poverty Studies Interdisciplinary Minor and an associate director of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns. Connie would be glad to hear from SHECP and poverty studies teachers at other institutions about applications for her new book.
