The Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP) will hold its 2019 Frueauff Closing Conference, Aug. 3-4, at Marymount University. SHECP is a collaboration among over two-dozen colleges and universities that integrates classroom study of poverty with tailored and focused summer internships and co-curricular activities.
Nearly 120 SHECP interns will gather to share their experiences following their work over the past eight weeks with nonprofits that address issues of poverty, including those related to community and individual services, education, healthcare and legal aid.
“We are quite proud of the hard work and dedication of the interns as they enter the capstone phase of their summer educational experience,” said Dr. Brett Morash, SHECP executive director. “These students are coming together to share their experiences from the summer in order to learn from one another.”
Dr. Anthony W. Fontes
Noted authors, Dr. Anthony W. Fontes, of American University, and Dr. Gabrielle Oliveira, of Boston College, will deliver keynote addresses to the students. They are expected to discuss the relationship between poverty and migration, based on their own published research in Fontes’ “Mortal Doubt: Transnational Gangs and Social Order in Guatemala City” (University of California Press, 2018); and Oliveira’s “Mothering Across Borders: Mexican Immigrants and Their Children in Mexico and in New York City” (New York University Press, 2018).
Each SHECP intern was provided a copy of the books at the beginning of the summer.

“Dr. Fontes’s and Dr. Oliveira’s scholarship adds texture to SHECP’s support for robust and innovative approaches to education about poverty.” said Dr. Stephanie Rolph, SHECP academic director. “Their work offers a more nuanced understanding to our current conversations about immigration, examining the universal human desire for prosperity and security.”
